"The NBA, that's a laugh. Don't you remember the LA/Sacramento Western
Conference Finals a few years ago when Sacramento was jobbed by the refs in
Game 6? The head referee later admitted that the owners instructed him to
give the game to the Lakers so the ratings for the finals would be a lot
higher. That's why I stopped watching the NBA"

Why is it a laugh? If the NBA is instructing refs to influence series, and
there is more than enough coincidences to make an argument that they are, it
would have no bearing on refs betting on the game.

Notice that the NBA squashes these rumors quickly as well. The Donaghy
issue should have been a lot bigger than it was, but the NBA did everything
in its power to kill it quickly. Don't want to make the fans and gamblers
nervous.

As far as reffing in general, if you wanted more fairness, a pool a refs
could be assembled before a game. Then, refs are chosen right before the
game from the pool. Not being able to guarantee influence on the game may
stem potential corruption.

This would be beneficial for boxing (see Hearns/Leonard II) since it is
corrupt to the core. As an aside, does boxing even exist or has it been
replaced by ultimate fighting competitions?
