I would say that Pele coming to America was one of the reasons we had such a surge of kid soccer leagues spring up in the 70s. All those new soccer fields. and all those kids learning the game.
I know he was talked about by my coaches in leagues I played in as a child, both in Virginia and Connecticut. And all those kids who played soccer in the 70s are now soccer moms and soccer dads, who went to the soccer games during college, who are encouraging their kids to play soccer instead of football, and who have a heck of a lot of the country's disposable income, and have a lot of the spare time to watch sports on tv. So, I think the seeds were planted decades ago, and we are about to see a huge harvest. We don't play the Red Bulls again this year, but I will be checking out tickets for next year, no doubt.
