"I still think it's a meme."

It's a book. With a Beck program, the audience is partly influenced by
emotion. Much harder in a book.

"Ultimately it's probably the corporations behind it -- Big Money -- like a
twisted version of the 'twilight bark'."

Of course they are. They want to make money by selling books.

Or maybe you mean those nefarious mega-corps that control the government.
Then all I could say is they play both sides of center very well.

Check this out: Insurance firms infuse GOP with big doses of
cash<http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-1004-health-insurance-politics20101004,0,6752608.story>

Money Quote: Faced with wide-ranging new requirements in the health care
law, the insurance industry is pouring money into Republican campaign
coffers in hopes of scaling back regulations while preserving the mandate
that Americans buy coverage.

They got what they wanted from the Democrats. Time to start working the
Republicans

"Makes sense. Sci-fi has a lot of 'futures' controlled by corps....And
crazy military governments, I guess."

They do. It's probably what we are heading for. By the way, the fusion of
government and big business is Fascism.

"Bush took us a lot closer to a crazy militaristic government than Obama
has, but the folks complaining now weren't then, when that was the right
time, compared to now."

On Bush, how so? In what sense?

On Obama, remember this quote:

"We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national
security objectives that we've set. We've got to have a civilian national
security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as
well-funded."

Fortunately, this has come to naught. Give him a second term and we'll see
what happens.

Can you remember other countries that had civilian paramilitary
organizations? Obviously, there was the Hitler Youth. Look up the CCC
sometime. Then there's the American
Legion<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Legion>(obviously, this
organization has changed a lot over the years):

"The American Legion is fighting every element that threatens our democratic
government – Soviets, anarchists, I.W.W.s, revolutionary socialists and
every other 'red.'"
"Should the day ever come when they menace the freedom of our representative
government, the Legion would not hesitate to take things into its own
hands – to fight the "reds" as the Fascisti of Italy fought them."
"Do not forget that the Fascisti are to Italy what the American Legion is to
the United States. And that Mussolini, the new premier, was the commander of
the Legion – the ex-servicemen of Italy.... The Legion is not in
politics.... But there is plenty of politics in the Legion – potential
power, I mean."
The AL was going to be the force behind the "Business
Plot<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_Plot>",
a coup attempt that failed (Years ago, I heard Oliver Stone was going to
make a movie about this; must have dropped the idea). Any way, FDR used
the AL to spy on American citizens and big business used them as strike
breakers.

Tainting the tea party movement with the charge of racism is proving to be
an effective strategy for Democrats. There is no evidence that tea party
adherents are any more racist than other Republicans, and indeed many other
Americans. But getting them to spend their time purging their ranks and
having candidates distance themselves should help Democrats win in November.
Having one’s opponent rebut charges of racism is far better than discussing
joblessness. - Mary Frances Be
