We have to care what China and Russia think for a few key reasons:

(1.) There's no UN resolution without them which would mean we'd have to
lead a coalition of the willing. In leading this coalition we'd bomb
stuff. In bombing stuff we'd kill innocents (or we'd be portrayed as having
done so). The bodies would be paraded on Al Jeezera. The headlines would
read, "US kills Arab women and children to steal our oil". This would not
be a good thing.

(2.) China and Russia may very well decide to fund or outright join the
other side - whoever that is. We have no idea who is fighting whom or what
they're fighting for; be it democracy or a better mouse trap. We don't know
because we suck at understanding Middle Eastern culture.

(3.) China and Russia would LOVE to have us invade Libya, and would LOVE to
watch us flail around in the desert burning dollars and lives. They're both
loaded with oil while we're not. Any US involvement in foreign wars
directly benefits them both. It would be a huge gift to them.

You don't open your mouth til you know what the shot is, and right now we
don't even know what it might be.
