Part politics, but part conviction as well. (Left will claim it's all the
former, while the right will claim it's all the latter....but as usual, the
answer is somewhere in the middle).

The politics side, they'd point to the shutdown and say "Look at what the
President made us do!" and blah blah blah, hoping the gullible buy into that
bullshit. As to the conviction part, they truly believe that our current
spending is at a critical point of no return, and that such a drastic
measure is necessary in the short term in order to ensure a better long
term.

We can, and probably should, argue whether or not they are right about
that....but mostly you'll just hear people arguing that they don't really
even have that conviction to begin with....and the pointless noise will just
continue.
