I don't even know if you can make that argument very well. A
Presidential election is the only time that we even get close in this
country to having people vote on a single thing. You can do a bunch of
polling and base some opinions on that, but since we don't have
national referendum votes in the US, we don't have much to go on other
than the pundits saying, "this is what votes meant", which is of
course more about what the pundits want things to be about.

Most polls put concerns about deficits way below concerns about jobs,
so I'd argue that Democrats in the House were getting punished for not
making enough traction on the unemployment rate rather than any
"message" about spending and deficits.

But that's just an opinion, no way to know for certain because each of
the races was individual. In the House race in the district next to
mine, I don't care for the Republican candidate they ran but the
Democrat has shown to have some mental stability issues. The Democrat
still won in this case but next time around he very well may lose
because of the revelations that have come out not because of any sort
of message about anything national.
