*The Florida Public Research Interest Group celebrated Tax Day by releasing
a
report<https://www.floridapirg.org/home/reports/report-archives/more-reports/more-reports/the-tax-shell-game-how-much-did-offshore-tax-havens-cost-you-in-2010>that
breaks down the cost of offshore tax havens, which allow corporations
and the rich to avoid $100 billion a year in taxes.

The strategy allows corporations and wealthy individuals to shift money they
earned in the U.S. to low-tax or tax-free jurisdictions, often tiny places
like Bermuda and the Cayman Islands, and then funnel the money back into the
country.
The lost revenue from such tax-avoidance schemes equals $434 for the average
U.S. taxpayer, according to the report. Florida’s share of the lost revenue
amounts to $4.4 billion, or about $290 per taxpayer — lower than the
national average because Florida contributes a smaller share of federal
taxes.
