As far as the Catholic Church is concerned, neither the theory of evolution evolution, nor the 'Big Bang' theory, contradict the Church's teachings (I was told this by a Catholic priest - now a Benedictine monk - who is a good friend of mine - though its not old news). He did add the disclaimer that the "Church reserves the right to say that God 'lit the fuse' on the big bang".
