24% of the people surveyed think welfare is the biggest contributor to poverty.
That means 76% of the people surveyed did NOT think welfare was the biggest contributor. So, while 'many' Americans think welfare is the biggest contributor to poverty, many more don't. It is fun to play with numbers...isn't it? For the record, I am not a fan of the current system. I think it needs to be overhauled. However, getting rid of the program that helps people because a few abuse it is not the correct course of action, in my opinion. I have never been on welfare, but in my years in EMS cared for quite a few...mostly in urban areas. I have seen abuses of the system, I am sure we all have, but I cannot help but think that is anecdotal at best.
