You know what.  I'll take back my statement.  I didn't receive welfare but
I did get a social security benefit based on the death of my father, who
was shot one night while holding a gun on someone else.  The benefit
expired when I turned 18.  So, it wasn't technically welfare, but it was
government assistance.  It was not enough to live a life of comfort but it
did supplement the minimum wage jobs held by family members.

and i guess i did."

I started working in a factory part time at 16.  All the motivation I
needed to get out.  I went back every summer until I graduate college.  It
kept the motivation level high.
