I think most of the people who have this problem because they really see
Atheism as a total absence of belief - not an actual belief.

Sort of like saying "I don't believe that Aliens vs Predators is a true
account of the moon landing".

Technically, yes you are believing something isn't true, but perhaps "the
thing" is so far fetched that it's not really something you need to
actively "believe" or "not believe".  Sort of like spending your entire day
"believing in" every obvious accepted non-truth.

But it's really just a bunch of semantics.
