There is generally an element of enlightenment associated with suspecnsions.
The book Apocolypse Culture (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0922915059/002-4553859-36 49656?v=glance) goes into it. The pictures in the chapter about piercings are quite graphic, people suspended by meathooks through their ankles, etc. They claim to be able to reach a state of Nirvana in some cases, it's not my thing but people are serious about this stuff.
