A coworker spent 10 minutes trying to explain this to someone just last week. The other person just couldn't get past "but, I just bought it". That's why I like McAfee's VirusScan Online. It pops up a little window telling you that there is an update available and give you a link to click on to get the update. It keeps bugging you until you do the update, as well.
