NO!  It's really, really bad.  It's analogous with cutting off the first joint of your 
finger.  Even if it's an indoor-only cat, should it get out it would be pretty much 
defenseless.

Perhaps you could do what I did - adopt a stray that is already declawed; no claws, no 
guilt.  There are tons of great animals that could use a good home.

Also, there are some funny looking plastic tips that you can glue(?) on their claws.  
I'll try to find the url.
