I took my vets word for it when he said that the cats experience discomfort
forever when declawed, so I trim my two indoor-cats claws once a week with
regular nail clippers.  After having a few ferrets, I got pretty good at
clipping nails without hitting the vein.  I tried the glue-on covers when
they were mentioned here a year or so back, but my younger cat had a
tendency to chew them off...
