Depends on how advanced the list management software is too. I am subscribed to several groups of mailinglists that make it much easier to split a thread over multiple lists by filtering out crossposted messages and delivering just one copy to everybody that is on multiple lists. But it helps that most of the subscribers are old-style, bearded Unix BOFHs too ;-)

Speaking of list management software:
The one thing that sets out the lists at houseoffusion.com is that they can not be fully managed by email. You can not send an email with HELP in the body to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and get an email in response with all the instructions for (un)subscribing, setting a digest etc. by email.
