put the 10 disc changer in there i can have like 8800/megs of music in
the car :>
Of course if ipod had a thing to plug into a cd player that would be
best but i do not think they have it that i know of.

Hmmm, just thinking
I have the Lord of the Rings trilogy on CD (unabridged <g>) - that's
14CDs a book
MP3 them and it'll prolly end up as about 1 or 2 CDs a book
Now all we need is a car stereo which plays MP3 CDs, and I can bore
Erika to death <vbg>
Even more thoughts... does anyone know if you can get a car stereo which
has a CD changer (10 preferrably) AND plays MP3 CDs?
Just think, the possibility of having effective 100+ CDs in your changer
<g>

Does Ipod have an adapter to plug into a cd player in your car? If not
then how does the ipod replace your car stereo for use with your mp3s?
My new radio i love now i can play mp3 cds in it all the time. Of course
i hardly ever do that because i'm so damn happy with XM Radio i don't
really listen to my mp3s much anymore even for long drives.

Multiple 80 GB drives.
I have many backups.
First, I have the CDs that I ripped from. These are stored on a cd
spindle stack - 50 per spindle, with cover. Stored in a box with the
inserts from the CD jewel cases.
Second, I have many of the songs on data CDs as mp3s (for use in my car
before I got the iPod). This is mainly organised by group, all the
albums by that group on one CD.
Third, for stuff that I doubt I can get another CD of if it gets
scratched, stuff I ripped from vinyl or cassette, or the stuff I got
from other people I have zipped and backed up onto cds.
Fourth, I have two complete sets of drives on two different computers.
Drives are so cheap now, and my time is valuable. I don't want to have
to rerip anything, and rename and recode the id3 tags (I put the lyrics
and tabs in for most songs, for example) so I have a replication system
set up. Every song ends up on two servers.
(80GB drives after rebate have been running about 90 bucks.)
(PCI IDE controller cards about 49 bucks)
I have the music broken out by GENRE per drive, then by subgenre, then
by group, then by album.
\\IMS\COUNTRY\_BLUEGRASS\Gillian Welch\Time Of The Revilator\Elvis
Pressley Blues.mp3
I use perl scripts to build songs catalog txt files.
I use CF to build playlists for winamp from those files.

Jerry:
Just out of curiousity...how do you have 240GB stored? do you have any
kind of backup?
More curious about the backup issue, as I have (what I thought was) a
fairly large collection (about 45GB) on one 80GB drive...and have often
thought about the inevitable HD crash.
Anyone else? Others have mentioned considerable-sized mp3 collections.
Backed up onto 100 CDs? 20 DVDs? Have you invested in tape backup? :)

Ray,
How is it handling a collection of that size? How long to initially
start up, and how long to display the collection pane?
Musicmatch has serious memory issues with large collections. I've had
to break my collection into separate lists, and change between them as
needed (mostly genre based).
I'd switch tonight if iTunes can handle larger collections (I'm up
around 240 GB now, with about 20GB of my iPod filled.)
(And can iTunes handle the iPod? I assume so, but figured I'd ask.)

Yes, I'm using as my player now for multiple reasons -
The radio player is very nice - it evens displays track info which my
other player did not. I also like how I can browse via genre and
artist.
My file system had been set up so that my cd rips and my.... um...
other
mp3s were separate. I imported both main folders (all 40+ gigs), and
now
I have an easier way of browsing my entire collection.
