Yep, been there, done that. I think once you've been through it, gotten the
diagnosis, gotten treatment, gotten better, you just "know" when it's
happening again. I think it's a bit hard to describe and your first time in
a full-blown depression I don't think most people recognize it for what it
is. The safest thing to do is go see someone qualified to evaluate you. A
psychiatrist or psychologist can ask all the right questions and/or give you
one of the many diagnostic tests and determine if you are depressed, how
depressed, and what needs to be done about it. It's also a real bitch trying
to "treat yourself" when you don't know what you're doing. Now that I'm
"experienced" with it, I can often do non-medical things to combat it
(eliminate alchohol and caffeine, cut back on sugar, exercise more, get more
sunlight, get enough sleep, etc.). But, until you know what you're dealing
with, I don't recommend self-treatment.
