The Mom was an interactive design program.  The father was a power plant
maintenace (or power plant something) program.

I think that the Architect "upgraded" Smith to "balance" Neo.  The
Oracle, IMHO, didn't design or create Smith, so much as was responsible
for his creation, as she knew that Neo must be balanced.

Maybe Neo is like that program in Windows that you can't kill without
rebooting the whole box.  Hence, all the talk in Reloaded about going to
the Source to restart the Matrix.
