On the special effects - I was surprisingly pleased with them.

Some of the spaceship stuff in StarGate (for example) has been pretty weak -
rumored to be because they've been cutting the effects budget.  I really
thought sci-fi was going to cheap out on this one.

Actually they may have cheaped out - computer effects come along quickly.
Since you mentioned "Farscape" I started thinking about the differences.
Farscape oozed greatness but it's generally visual effect while good, were
still "TVish" - kinda like "Babylon 5".  There's a certain quality to the
computer animation at that level that says "good, not great".  "Battlestar
Galactica" has that same quality - but much diminished.

It's just great how far effects (or, more specifically, the effects you get
on sci-fi's budget) have come even in the relatively short time since
"Farscape".

I loved a lot of the small, but highly realistic touches: the way missles
would seek and dodge AND leave effective exhaust trails.  The way the human
ships clearly maneuvered with thruster jets was really great.  The big
explosion and fire looked better than I thought they would as well.

Also I loved how they continually showed scale: the tiny little Vipers
leaving the hulking Galatica - for a few seconds you couldn't see them
thinking "what's this scene about" then you saw their little spec selves and
said "damn that thing's big!"

I did like the CGI Cylons as well - but I don't expect to see many/any more.
They were clearly meant for show - very little (and very stiff) movement
with one close-up animation.  We won't see them much, I think - if we were I
think these would have moved a little better and we'd have gotten a better
look at them.

I don't think there were any spoilers there. if anybody is surprised that
there were spaceships, missiles and Cylons here, then I'm sorry. ;^)

I agree with the baby scene, but I guess it made the point about the fact
that looking like a human and having humanity are two different things
altogether.

So far I actually like the show. I am surprised to find myself wondering if
they will make a series out of it. Since they axed Farscape I have been a
bit iffy about Sci-Fi.

The acting is a bit weak in a few spots but overall is really good. They
really did a great job on the special effects too.

Same here - I'm pretty happy with it. Although the baby scene was.... ick. I
just can't stand stuff like that since I had kids. ;)

Mild spoiler....

The 2 cylons they showed in the beginning were super cool. I hope they use
them again.
