I was pleasantly suprised as well by the first part, and am looking forward
to the second half. it makes me wonder how they can complete the story in
just two hours, when they went as slow as they did in the first half.

Details? Ha! I sent the message and then went to bed.

It was shown twice again last night and will be shown again tonight before
the second part. And it's on again this Sunday. So I'm not going to say
anything about the plot itself. It's a two-parter and while I was pleased
with it, that's because I thought it was going to be crash and burn
sucktackular.

IMO, they more than adequately addressed the stylistic differences between
the original and this series. In fact, I think it was a damn fine cop-out.
The first shot of Galactica came in at that rear three quarters angle with
odd optical lens distortion that was part of the original show, and later in
the show there's even a bit of the original theme music. The show picks up
20 years after the first Cylon wars. Technology has progressed. The
Galactica is an aging vessel and about to be decomissioned. It's used
primarily as a tourist exhibit and there's a gift shop and museum display in
one of the hangers. In the museum they have an old Cylon in a glass case and
old Vipers on display. The old equipment though is going to be the saving
grace against the Cylons and their new ability to affect networked computer
systems.

The evil Cylon woman is sexxay. Olmos as Adama is haggard and gravelly. He's
looking old, but his character is supposed to. Starbuck is fine as a woman
(I got over that kind of problem 15 years ago when I saw a stage production
of Romeo and Juliet with Mercutio played by an asian woman), but her
tremulous first line left me wondering if she was going to be a strong
enough character. She makes up for it later.

My only complaint? It's fucking SLOW. Why is it that when you have a TV
miniseries it automatically means that it's going to be waaaaaay too much
exposition? The whole 2 hours was basically initial character development.
Sure some stuff happened, but it was just to set up the second episode. I
hope.
