got engaged, we looked over just about every option. Her parents were retired
military and living on her Dad's retirement, although they indicated they would
do whatever was needed to fund the wedding of their only daughter, even if it
meant having to go into debt. Of course we were offered the church facilities
at no cost. All my older siblings had experienced church weddings.
After a lot of discussion among family and friends we ended up being a little
unconventional, and we held the wedding and reception as a yard party at my
parents home. We used a few strings of colored lights, a rented tent to cover
the refreshment tables, and a scattering of citronella oil torches for insect
control. My mother-in-law actually baked the wedding cake and decorated it.
A tuxedo rental store convinced me of the value of renting tuxedos for the
groomsmen, but also the wedding gown and gowns for the bridesmaids.
We ended up with a wedding that would have befitted crowned royalty, and the
total expense was less than $1000.00 including flowers. My Dad performed the
ceremony, and I had three brothers and a friend who did honors as a quartet.
accompanied by recorded music
All this for a groom that was earning $300.00 per month at the time, and she was
earning about the same. (this was in 1960 though)
We were able to honeymoon for a week in Hawaii and no one went into debt.
Oh, it was a June wedding, the weather was great and cooperative.

Yeah, Im getting married on Sept 25th, then on the 29th we get on a plane
to Ireland!
I kinda expected some of the costs to be high, Ive photographed a few
weddings in my day, and did some research on what others charged for similar
services, so I had an idea. What I wasnt prepared for was how quickly
places and people booked. We got engaged On Christmas Eve of 2002, we
started making arrangements shortly after we were engaged, and a number of
places were already booked.
Our wedding is going to be in the evening, and the same location already has
an afternoon wedding booked. We are using the same location for both the
wedding and the ceremony, just to make it easier. Photographers, DJs,
Reception locations and everything else books so fast I couldnt believe it.
I spoke with 3 or 4 DJs before I found one open, and this was a year in
advance.

WOW. I spent all weekend with my fiancé making wedding plans and booking the
reception and Church, etc.. Weddings cost a fortune these days. We are
footing the bill for everything ourselves and I am just amazed at the cost
of the entire event!
