Hi Jim, I agree that the formal approach set out by the [IETF RFC 2119 - Key words for use in RFCs to Indicate Requirement Levels](https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2119) (SHALL, SHOULD, MAY etc) is very useful, but, as you say, it is not used in CF or in the NUG, so I'm not sure of its relevance here.
In any case, the line from the NUG which I quoted is not a requirement, it is the definition of a NUG coordinate variable.
