Regarding "generic coordinate variable" versus "coordinate variable" — I would 
prefer to avoid the word generic. The problem is that we have been using 
"coordinate variable" in a specific sense, so it would be confusing to start 
using it in a general sense at this point. As a result we need some qualifier 
to indicate that both what it being said applies to both kinds of coordinate 
variables.

We could make a point to use phrases such as "a coordinate variable of either 
type", which would avoid the use of the word generic. It also makes the 
language more precise.
