Dear Martin Yes, I agree that both `string X(X)` and `char X(X)` should not be allowed. They are not of numeric type so cannot be coordinate variables.
I agree that "coordinate variable" would make sense to refer to both dimension and auxiliary coordinate variables. Although it would make sense, I argue however that we should instead use the longer phrase "generic coordinate variable" for the avoidance of doubt about what we mean!
