@ethanrd : I don't understand how it can be that Jim is unaware of reasons which have been repeatedly stated in response to his questions. It is, I think, unkind to repeatedly state that you see no reason against your views when people have offered arguments at length (myself, Karl and Jonathan have all given reasons for opposing the use of `string x(x)` as a data variable --- I'd like to know why Jim can't "see" or acknowledge these). To make progress in written communication, we need to respond to what people have actually written and acknowledge the arguments that have been given.
I understand that you and others view this as complex. I'd appreciate it if you could set out what you consider to be the complex issues. It appears to me that the discussion has been going in circles for some time. @sethmcg : yes, some people are opposed to use of `string x(x)` either as a dimension coordinate variable or as a variable (specifically: Jonathan, Karl and myself). Reasons have been stated repeatedly above. Within the current convention your use case is supported with an auxiliary coordinate of the form `string x(ix)`. We do not normally consider changes to convention just because people would prefer another approach: the question raised by Jonathan is whether there is a use case which requires `string x(x)`. @JimBiardCics : "refusing to acknowledge that these views have been stated is unkind" is a reference to your failure to acknowledge that people have given reasons for disagreeing with you in the above discussion and the implication that careful arguments from others contain no reason. -- You are receiving this because you are subscribed to this thread.
