Thanks for your postings. Although I've not been there myself, I guess that 
your mind is a very interesting place to be, but maybe you should get out of it 
a bit more. :-)
The statement you propose above ("If a one-dimensional variable is not a 
coordinate variable, it must not have the same name as its dimension") is 
clear. It is consistent with the statement I quoted before from chapter 5 ("The 
name of a multidimensional coordinate variable should not match the name of any 
of its dimensions") if one-dimensional is a special case of multdimensional 
(which I believe was our intention), but your statement is stronger. The two 
could be stated at once as "If a variable is not a [dimension] coordinate 
variable, it must not have the same name as any of its dimensions."
