Dear Martin
As I remarked above, the same variable in a file could serve as a data variable
or an auxililary coordinate variable. In fact any variable in the file might be
regarded as a data variable by the user of the file. Hassell et al. (2017)
discuss this point. Hence we cannot define particular variables as being data
variables. It's not an exclusive status. I agree that we ought to say what we
mean by it, though. Is it in the NUG? I don't recall that we deliberately
invented it in writing CF.
