OK, just had a big talk about this with my colleague who's a net list
veteran, here's the upshot:

1. As list members, we should sort this topic out now, so we (hopefully)
don't have to deal with it again.

2. My assumption - without thinking - was that the original poster was
somehow personally connected to the missing child. Is this true?

3. My colleague has filled me in on how Usenet communities were often
destroyed by increasing volumes of OT posts, and how there are people out
there who subscribe to lists on important issues (missing children, product
recalls, etc.) who - with good intentions - forward these to any and every
list.

4. It's a good comment on this and the other web-related list that I've been
on since I started participating in lists that I've never come across this
sort of phenomenon. Hence my assumption that the original poster was
personally connected to the child in question.

5. Obviously if the original question was: "Can I forward on important OT
alerts that I receive and am concerned about in a general way to this
list?", the answer should be no - and we should all understand why this
isn't callous.

6. Equally obviously, if any of us are unfortunate enough to be personally
connected to such a situation, list members would understand if an alert
post was made.

As I said in my first response to this, I don't know what an Amber alert
is - maybe some of the US list members know it's a general alert that would
imply no connection on the part of the original poster.

What do we all think? Are there any list rules already about this issue,
aside from the generic "keep on-topic" rule? I can't find anything on the
new House of Fusion site.

cheers,

- Gyrus
