I had a discussion with Mike Chambers about the authorization scheme on
Macromedia-Talk yesterday.

The activation software is by Macrovision, the same company which was behind
Intuit's Activation Scheme for Turbo Tax this year.

UTF-8

Among other things, this program caused my computer to BSOD whenever I
burned a CD-Rom (not burning a CD of Turbo Tax, but any CD, audio or data).
Which meant because I needed to use Turbo Tax to file my taxes, that I was
unable to use a piece of hardware that I use legally during the entire time
Turbo Tax was installed on my computer.

Mike Assures me that:

"I would not expect it to cause any issues. We have had an extensive beta
test on this (one of our largest ever) and have not had any reports of this
issue."

Now, I believe that I heard that CFMX had one of the most extensive beta
tests ever in the history of the company, and we know how great CFMX worked
out of the box!

Intuit has backed down off their authorization scheme.

Microsoft regularly releases non-activated versions of its software for
corporate users (to whom activation is more than just a pain).

(which means that piracy for MS products hasn't stopped. All you need is one
non-activated copy out there).

I don't really care about contribute, but what about when they use this
scheme for CFMX? Can you imagine what happens when your server hard drive
dies?

Oh, it gets *better*:
"License information .... is stored ... unused part of track zero of the

drive"
*What* !
Why ? If my drive fails, it's no help. If I uninstall the product will it be

removed ? If yes, then it's no help, if no then it's not uninstalling
correctly.
:shakes head
