You don't have to know that everyone is a non-techie, just a lot of them. Cross sections of people will include some techies. The stats for www.firstnight.org show a marked increase in FireFox usage as well - and that's not a technical site. > 2) Yes...FF use has increased...but the point I'm trying to get across is > that it will never hit that critical mass where it really yanks major > marketshare from MS until it's bundled with new computers. It may or it may not. Who knows. I lean towards the "not" category simply because: 1) You're argument is powerful - the vast majority of people don't change what they get (unless somebody changes it for them). And they get Safari on their OS X and IE on their Windows. 2) MS is still a remarkably nimble company in a lot of ways. It's very unlikely that they'll allow FireFox to reach that kind of market penetration without a significant response (we're already seeing that). But still - who really knows? Just because MOST software classes are dominated by pack-ins doesn't mean they all have to be - and some aren't. Powerful allies also help: AOL dominates the IM market for non-AOL ISP users. Google dominates search. Support from powerful allies like these (and others) could push the scales remarkably. > The only possible exception is that we techs tell every non-tech we know > that they must have FF and we go and install it for them ;-) Of course this is exactly what happens. Socially most people with computers have a friend or relation that "knows computers" to at least some extent. I unofficially support my home computers and at least 12 others. However this isn't a very good marker since, techie tho' I am, I still leave IE as the default browser on those computers I "support" simply because it's the most usable for those people. Not all techies will be spreading FireFox and not all non-technies will be sticking with IE. All you can really do, to bring this full-circle, is to watch the logs and count the hits.
