I have to agree with Michael on this one. There are better ways to handle
this situation. Many auto-responders have a setting to send a message for
each message or to send a message for each incoming address. If you select
to reply once for each incoming address you don't end up with a loop like
the one he is talking about and it isn't so annoying. I can deal with one
message that says "I'll be out of the office on such-and-such a date" but
when I get 20 of them it's pretty annoying.
Of course, we are people who work on the internet. Most of us have multiple
email accounts. Auto-responders aren't really necessary for personal email
accounts, just for work accounts. So subscribe your personal account to the
list. Most email clients can check mail from multiple accounts so you can
still get the list email while you're at work. Then you don't end up
sending auto-response messages to the lists, you don't irritate anyone, and
if you manage to get fired while you're away you can still catch up on your
mail. It's all good.
