Matt, since you mentioned Corel's failed approach to keeping older
versions available, I might mention something in the Corel vs. Quark
area. Corel Ventura Publisher users are similar to CF users (except that
their installed base is so painfully small). They feel, almost without
excpetion, that they use the best product and know all the hype from the
other guys is BS. Numerous feature comparisons have been made between
Ventura and Quark Xpress (page layout apps, for those who don't know).
Quark offers "Xtensions" to its base product, and developers create and
market these add-ons. Corel includes all fuctionality in the product
with no extra add-ons, except for VB scripting. To get the same
functionality from Quark that you get out-of-the-box with Ventura
Publisher, you have to pay, literally, thousands of dollars.

I think add-ons are a poor idea--they allow a manufacturer to make a
stripped down product and leave important functionality to independent
