Common' now "ewww" that makes it sound so bad ... it has been working great for us ... (building content sites http://www.outdoorsite.com) and other sites. If you keep your most commonly needed data outside (or in both places), it doesn't effect too much if at all.
Since we use generic database structures it really benefits with our design... It can be helpful to others who have a particular need for it.. The article is a suggestion to let people know another way to do things. It isn't for everyone and it has it's drawbacks (and it's plus's).
