Our CMS uses XML in the DB to create a sort of extendable database - similar
to the way Spectra uses WDDX, as far as I can gather.
One of the big advantages of XML over WDDX for this kind of application is
that you can use XPath to search for elements within objects.
We hadn't considered going open source but it's an interesting idea...
As for your original question, I reckon the future of WDDX is pretty safe
(viz. the way WDDX is integrated into recent versions of PHP). It was a
great initiative from Allaire, and well ahead of its time.
