You would be suprised how little some developers know about SQL.

Isn't this the core issue? All the talk about CF not beeing competitive or a platform you can compare with ohters is in my opinion a way to set focus on the wrong thing. The difference between a good developer and a not so good one is that you do have a deeper knowledge in programming basics, models, structure etc. To this you need to understand and master SQL.

CF is stronger the better developer you are. If you are using a mvc model and really use your skills and use CF to it's edge you can really do amazing stuff. Not just shuffling data forth and back but also see to it that you have an optimized, scalable application on all levels. This takes skill.

The other side of the coin is that CF is easy to get started with is definately a good thing. A newly born developer can get started pretty easily and sure, the code will probably be both spaghetti and pizza at first but have you ever seen some PHP, ASP or JSP code out there?

As an expericenced developer I admit it's not easy to stick to a well defined model. It's also not always easy to work with mvc in mind. The important thing though is to separate the professional and genuine well made apps from the bad ones. This goes for everyone, not just CF developers.

We use CF because the platform is great, competative and scalable.

Why are you using it?

A paradox is that some people should reconsider they choice of platform since CF seems to hard and too open yet the same people whine about it's too easy and not a real platform. I can't really get that. If you know what you're doing you can do great things, if not you can screw things up. Isn't that appliable to any platform?

When it comes to Macromedias sales strategies regarding server products we have alot to wish for but somehow it's us as developers that need to lead the way by doing the best apps. My experience is that results are valued much higher than talk.

I don't think I added anything to the discussion but couldn't resist. :)
