You're right, I'm mainly assuming.
But still, it is the first public large site based on CFMX and CFCs.

In the world top from eRatings, Macromedia.com is around the 23th place.
Here are the sites with a similar or higher load :
1 Yahoo 120 763 (000 unique visitors)
2 MSN 110 736
3 AOL Time Warner 95 282
4 Microsoft 80 934
5 Google 72 523
6 eBay 48 895
7 Amazon 47 216
8 Lycos Network 46 135
9 About-Primedia 33 896
10 CNet Networks 23 194
11 Wanadoo 20 764
12 Sony 20 763
13 Walt Disney Internet 19 599
14 T-Online 18 397
15 Sharman Networks 18 088
16 Infospace 17 893
17 Vivendi Universal 17 342
18 Real Networks
19 Tiscali 15 670
20 Viacom International 15 334
21 The Gator Corporation 15 151
22 Rakuten 15 106
23 Macromedia 14 681

Do you have any figures that shows that they scale better that
Macromedia.com?
It would be interesting to know what are the configuration of such web
sites.
Usually such hosting/architecture info are fully confidential.

The other problem is that, it is always difficult to compare the scalability
of such sites... most of them are "nearly 95% static content" web sites
(change once a day), which means content caching can be heavily used to
handle the load.
Don't forget that some parts of Macromedia.com (mainly the RIAs) are fully
dynamic applications.
