Yes, I use filters and labels, too. They are quite handy
You suggest that messages can be sorted, but for me the sorting
abilities of gmail are their worst feature. As a matter of fact I
think gmail's motto is something like, "Don't sort, search". Only the
labels can be used as a weak version of sorting, imo. Pine permits
sorting on subject, date, sender, arrival time, and more.

I see, for you removal is accomplished by the label filters.
