I had a hard time with a wire brush. The brush kept loading up and losing it's effectiveness. With the heat gun you just want to soften it up not melt it. I guess everyone has a way that works best for them. The heat gun was best for me. Fast and easy to clean up. After the undercoat cools, you can pick it up by hand. I then sanded any small stuff that was left or used lacquer thinner to clean it up.

I used a Sander/Polishing grinder which I purchased at Sears. I put a course wire wheel on it and wire brushed the undercoat from my trunk area, wheel wells etc. In tight spots I used a die grinders with a smaller wire wheel. This is a very dirty job and way to remove the undercoat but it works. You must be careful with the amount of heat you can generate using a wire wheel. I would also be careful with the heat gun. If you have to remove undercoat from the side fender area, you could blister the outside paint and mostly warp the fender panels. This would be the same problem you would see if you sand blasted the outside paint off. If you generate too much heat the panels will warp. Be careful not the generate too much heat. You might try a paint removing solvent, something that you brush on and let it loosen the paint(undercoat) so you can scrap it off. I am not sure if it will work on the undercoat, but it would not cost too much to find out. I think that the stuff that Eastwood sells for removing undercoat must likely is something that will loosen it up and then you scrap. Try some paint remover. Also, I think most automotive car paint store sell something like this also.

If it's a small area, I had good luck with a heat gun and a putty knife. The heat gun I bought at Sears. (Paint dept.) The putty knife, well, what ever works.

Subject: [Chevelle-List] Undercoat

Hey Guys.....I am now taking on the task of cleaning off the crap that the previous owner put down to cover the trunk damage in my car ......stripped a bit off and found the usual rust ..in about 2-3 years I'm looking at a frame off on the car...now what I plan to do in the interim is scrape all this undercoat out of the trunk , sand as much surface rust as I can,put on some rust converter and then paint the trunk with black rust stop.

What I want to know is what stripper you guys recommend for scraping out this undercoat stuff?
