Use a silicon sealant acrossed the front & rear of the block, instead of the included
rubber or caulk gasket. If there is a one piece gasket, still put a daub of sealant
at the corners where the head/block/manifold come together. Also torque in 2
increments. First time to 20 pounds, then hit 30 on second pass.

MAKE SURE that you mark the distributor & rotor alignment before removing it. If
possible, rotate motor to Top dead center (timing marks aligned) so you know exactly
where it is - if you have problems after everything is assembled.

Subject: [Chevelle-List] Tips on intake manifold gasket
Date: Thu, 04 Apr 2002 10:20:49 -0600

I have decided to put on a new Edelbrock carb on my poorly running '71 454.
This is the car that as it turned out had a carb on it that was shown to be
for a 1972 chevy 350 pickup! Anyway, I want to replace the intake manifold
gasket at the same time but have never done so. I have the service manual
and it shows the torque sequence and the torque at 30 ft pounds. Any tips
or suggestions on this gasket replacement?
