End play in/out will not help to determine if you axle bearings are bad. john suggestion works on a BAD bearing and U joint. Rear sounds can be transmitted from center to side through the tube, kind of like a megaphone. check you oil level frist , One technic I have used successfully is to put the rear of the care on jack stands, renove the rear wheel/tire and drum. You then start the car and put in in reverse. I use a short copper rod as a stethoscope. placing it at the outer wheel bearing area and the carrier bearing area.. as John pointed out, if you detect a problem. pulling the axel for inspection and replaceing the outer bearings.seals are not that much $$$ just time consumming,
