HEI is kinda a step up from the stone age of ignitions. It basically replaces the old points and condenser (that blow out dang near every 10,000 miles and at every possible incontinent time) with a ignition module. The advantages are just about everything... better spark up to 4500 rpm, blah blah blah... disadvantages... well not really very many. Basically it is kinda like the advantages and disadvantages between 4 wheel drum brakes and 4 wheel disc brakes minus the large cost. I'm not sure of the exact year GM started using HEI.... I wanna say mid seventies. The distributors and wiring are very easy to find at junk yards and is usually cheap too.
