The dash wiring harness and fuse block, with it's through the fire wall clips.. can be a PITA . You frist should take a long look at your harness and examine it and determine it's condition.. Was it butt spliced to death ? was it left exposed and all the lamp sockets all the internial plugs corroded ? if infact it has all the above problems and the fuse block and through firee wall plugs are in the same shape I would opt for a different harness.. your 64 or 65 none gauge, shoud not be a major problem to find a GOOD uncut replacement...but don't just slap it in If it's just in need of a rebuild,, thats a job, I think can be done by the average guy..
It has been talked about different methods to clean the plugs,pins,sockets and fuse clips in the harness. all seem to have merit.. I tend to stick to a more none abbrasive approach..( if possible) CRC QD Electronic Cleaner De-Ox IT.. A hard red erraser.. BRASS cleaner brush after yo have the WHOLE harnes referbished, re taped ( if needed) Don'tuse .99 sears tape,, get real harness tape from a re-pop place or buy the BEST 3M stuff at Home Depot 88+ at 4.00 a roll, it will not melt and make everthing sticky and slimy. wash everthing with alcohol it's less expensive then the other agents, but not as GOOD.. And when reasemble use lots of electrial-silicone jell.. it keeps mosture & air from entering , thus preventing the corrosion cycle from starting again..( Some people use Vasaline ! IMO not a good idia.). The major re-pop harnes suppliers will sell you plugs and clips if you need them to referb you harness. MH, & Factory Fit.. Once IMO your 39 year old wireing start TELLING we need attenion, The is only one way to do it. and it's not the firman aproach of addressing the problem when you have one.. Because today it's the ignition switch, tomorrow it's the light switch next it's the dimmer switch then the dash lamps ece ect ect.. and let's hope not a catastrophic melt down...
