Thanks Bill. Dye-checking is a good way to go. I'll look into that. I got
the transmission from a running 1970 Chevelle that a friend made an SS clone
from, and wanted a TH400 in place of the TH350 that I now have. It is quite
possible that it needs some re-sealing.

That's a pretty long way for the drip to travel, since the speedo gear is
in the tailshaft housing.  My first thought is that it could be the torque
converter seal on the trans leaking down the bellhousing on to the pan
mounting flange.  If you know anyone in your area who could dye  check it
for you, that would be the best way to find it.  Having the cable off or
attached will have nothing to do with a leak--the cable doesn't have a seal
or gasket.
