The rotor will only go on one way. You need to pull the distributor out (mark where it was pointing when you pulled it), turn the shaft 180 degress, then put it back in, and make sure you have the wires on in the right order. If you are finding that it runs better with no pinging at 16-18 BTDC, you may not be exactly 180 degrees out. I would suggest pulling the valve cover and making sure that you really are exactly at TDC when the rotor is pointing to the #1 plug wire.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Resulting questions HEI!

If I've got this right I can turn the housing back 180 degrees as long as I do the same with the rotor?

But one thing puzzles me a bit! I adjusted the advance to 10 by turning the dist housing,

nothing strange with that, but she's running a bit rough when idling.

Then I tried to adjust the advance it even further, all the way up to 16-18 and the

result almost freaked me out, The engine started to run extremely smooth & quiter, but at a bit higer rpm as a result,

and I got a MONSTER respons when I gave her some good gas. It felt like a completely

different engine, more like a european sports car feel, Immediate respons, quick, aggresive,

yet smooth (I dont know if this will change under load?).

Any comments to this?

Best regards
Pelle
