Hello, I know how you feel, when I was still in college I wanted a puppy really bad but couldn't get one. Once I graduated and my husband and I got married we decided to adopt a dog. We got her as soon as we came back from our honeymoon. We adopted a chi/jack russ mix from a rescue. I don't know how busy you are but this was a great option for us because she was already house and crate trained. We new she was up to date on shots and that she liked to ride in the car. Being that we were both working full time back then it worked out great for us. Just one option to consider. We didn't want to get a puppy right away because they need to be let out more often and we didn't want the puppy to be lonley. It is always good to start off training right with a puppy, it's just easier in the end if you can spend more time with them. I am quitting my job to stay home soon and we are getting a new puppy, he will be 5 months old and able to hold his bladder longer. We are getting him from a reputable breeder who is AKC registered and shows dogs. I personally would not want to get a very young puppy without being able to be home with it most of the time to train it and give it the love and attention it needs.
Depending on how much you work, things I would consider, getting a rescue that is already trained or an older puppy, (I wouldn't take a chi away from it's mom who is less than 12 weeks at least). Definately a larger chihuahua as I have heard they have less health problems. Research the breeder if you choose to use one. Please do not buy from a pet store, and be careful of those who advertise in the newspaper, sometimes those dogs are stolen or come from puppy mills. Just some thoughts, don't let anyone discourage you from your choice of breeds. I have always loved small dogs which some don't understand. Definately research the breed characteristics and decide if they go with your lifestyle and personality. I like to read lots of books to prepare and the library is free! and my Jezebel loves to dress up! Great fun! Just some ideas :) Good luck!
