yes crates are the little wire cages. Some people, including myself, use carriers as crates. My chis prefer the darkness they can get inside the carriers better.
 
A kennel, technically, is an outside confined area. But some people refer to their inside x pens ect as kennels. An x-pen is sorta like a baby play pen only it doesn't have the bottom in it. I actually have these baby gate things that can be joined on either side to make as big or small as you want. I have mine divided right now into two separate pens because I have put the cat's litter box in one to keep the dogs out, lol. The cat can get over, the dogs can't.
 
Here is a link to the type of thing I use as a pen/kennel. But the crate is a much smaller confinement and this smaller area is necessary for housebreaking.
 
 
The difference in this and what I use is that mine is plastic and is screened in x shapes instead of the square shapes like this one.

gosh I am so confused.  What is the difference in a crate and a kennel?  Sorry to sound so ignorant.  Aren't crates the sort of wire looking cages that can come with dividers and the kennels are like the carriers? Bear with me please.  Last time I had a small dog was eons ago and it has been ages since I have tried to housetrain an animal.

I have only heard one person who fed theirs in the crate. Sounds like they did sorta a reverse of the norm and it worked for them...actually could be worth a try. But most people do not feed in the crate, but do leave plenty of water and some food in the crate if they are to be gone for a while. For the most part, the chi puppy should be in a crate any time they can not be fully supervised.
 
You are coming from a stand point of considering both a crate and a kennel (I am assuming by kennel, you mean like an x-pen and not like a kennel outside!) Not a lot of people would use both. MY last two chi pups where crate trained and then once they were trained the crate remained opened and they basically use it as a den to come and go as they please to sleep.
 
My last pup is being x-penned trained. He is in a small x-pen about the size of a baby play pen and his food and water is in there.
 
It would be possible to put the crate inside the pen, but if you leave the crate door open when you do this then it will simply give the pup the opportunity to use the crate to sleep and simply go out into the pen to potty. Kinda misses the point. Too much room for training. But if you crate it when you are gone or can't watch it and then leave it open when you are home then it may help to associate the pen with his own room and the crate with his den and hopefully learn to keep both clean.

That is what I figured.  I am still reading about crate training. So far it seems that you feed the pup in the crate, take them out to potty, they sleep in the Kennel until trained.  Is this about right?

congrats on the new furbaby. Mt new pups are always in an x pen until they are potty trained. 3 of my chis sleep with me, but they did not do that as pups. The bed is a privilege for the fully housebroken, lol. I think crate training is the best way to go, jmo
