I think open crates are pretty positive. They
*are* the lair of the dog, the place where they
can rest, the place where they can get away. In
some families that nesting area/lair is an
important and healthy item for the pet. I live
alone with two Chihuahuas, neither of them has
been crated, but I am retired and rarely gone for
any length of time. I might have reconsidered and
crate trained were I still extremely active and
leaving home more than I do. When my Mini-Pin was
still living, he did prefer to sleep in his crate
and watch activity around him from a safe quiet
place. The door was never closed. The crate was
always part of the computer room where I spend
much of my time.

In the case of my two little ones who have free
roam of the house, they spend much time asleep in
beds in the computer room, and when family visits
and I am in living room, both dogs interact for
awhile but when they tire they both usually park
beneath the wing chair I am using (lair/den?) so
they can be in the area of activity but recluse
themselves so they can rest. The nesting instinct
is very strong.

It is a great error to take oneself for more
than one is, or for less than one is worth.
