I think most experienced chi owners will understand exactly what you are saying. Once they are older enough to not need to be crated, they still tend to WANT to go to their crate. My Honey who passed last March, would open and close the door on his crate to keep the others out. The ones I have now don't even have doors on them any more... Marsha

We leave it open all the time for him, it is a place where he can go and hide (or think he is hiding), just take a nap, or watch the wonderful world of feet go by. When we have to leave him alone he goes in the crate with the door closed. We know he will be safe and not get into mischief that could hurt him. It is cozy, warm, and familiar. Not in anyway related to being chained. Barbara L, and Roul who loves his little crate, or Casita as we call it.
