Sounds like you need to get him some toys to keep himself occupied. Perhaps a
kong with treats inside to keep him busy while you slip away. The other
alternative is to ignore the whinning, no matter how irritating it is.
Eventually he will get the message that you are not going to come back because
he makes noise.
